Movement Learning and Leadership Development Project

සංස්කරණය

Hello

The Wikimedia Foundation’s Community Development team is seeking to learn more about the way volunteers learn and develop into the many different roles that exist in the movement. Our goal is to build a movement informed framework that provides shared clarity and outlines accessible pathways on how to grow and develop skills within the movement. To this end, we are looking to speak with you, our community to learn about your journey as a Wikimedia volunteer. Whether you joined yesterday or have been here from the very start, we want to hear about the many ways volunteers join and contribute to our movement.

To learn more about the project, please visit the Meta page. If you are interested in participating in the project, please complete this simple Google form. Although we may not be able to speak to everyone who expresses interest, we encourage you to complete this short form if you are interested in participating!

Additional interface for edit conflicts on talk pages

සංස්කරණය

Sorry, for writing this text in English. If you could help to translate it, it would be appreciated.

You might know the new interface for edit conflicts (currently a beta feature). Now, Wikimedia Germany is designing an additional interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. This interface is shown to you when you write on a discussion page and another person writes a discussion post in the same line and saves it before you do. With this additional editing conflict interface you can adjust the order of the comments and edit your comment. We are inviting everyone to have a look at the planned feature. Let us know what you think on our central feedback page! -- For the Technical Wishes Team: Max Klemm (WMDE) 14:15, 26 පෙබරවාරි 2020 (යූටීසී)[reply]

Ayubowan! I intend to request sysop access at Meta in about a week, mainly to work with media files on siwiki:

  • Delete clearly copyrighted files (some examples), and replace uses with suitable Commons alternatives
  • Move suitable files to Wikimedia Commons via FileImporter Extension (pending documentation at MediaWiki)
  • Improve licensing templates (i.e. accessibility and formatting), and license conversion (i.e. during export)

After a week, the request will be completed at Meta considering that there is only one active admin here, and no bureaucrats. WP:RFA was not used due to the same reason, and also because it was never used before (i.e. only a direct translation from enwiki). Please feel free to share any concerns below. Thank you! Rehman 03:19, 31 මාර්තු 2020 (යූටීසී)[reply]

I strongly disagree with this. If you have the ability to note down the files with copyright issues you can tag them for deletion. Since currently there is no backlog on the subject I personally can manage the deletion requests. Is there a need to have sysop access for the other tasks? --Lee (talk) 06:32, 31 මාර්තු 2020 (යූටීසී)[reply]
There's no backlog because you are probably the most active user here and the only admin around; there is no one else to tag or review. Have you seen the files in the link above, and their sources/licences? Appreciate if you can substantiate your disagreement. Rehman 07:14, 31 මාර්තු 2020 (යූටීසී)[reply]
We've had issues in the past where people from English Wikipedia coming in an using bulldozing approach to apply their theories here. Therefore we do not trust people with sysop rights that easily. I believe you have misunderstood what I meant earlier. I disagree on you getting sysop access here but not on the rest.--Lee (talk) 08:18, 31 මාර්තු 2020 (යූටීසී)[reply]
Hi, Lee! Not to step on any toes but is there any opposition to deleting some of the obvious copyvios? I noticed that many of the problematic files, which are clearly not own work as indicated by the uploads licensing come from one account. Here is an example. Praxidicae (talk) 14:07, 31 මාර්තු 2020 (යූටීසී)[reply]
Hello Lee, there are many files that are copyrightvio here and do not have appropirate license. Praxidicae is a Global sysop and she can help in this situation. she doesn't need local adminship for clean up since the wiki is already within scope so letting her help here will be good for project. Thank you.-BRPever (talk) 14:27, 31 මාර්තු 2020 (යූටීසී)[reply]
Why is it so important for you to exercise your admin rights here? You have a way to help us by tagging them. But you do not want to do that; right? We have two admins here and of them one is very active at the moment. Doesn't that count? --Lee (talk) 18:24, 31 මාර්තු 2020 (යූටීසී)[reply]
Hello, the important thing for all of us is to solve the issue, regardless if ourself, or with your help. We can obviously tag all of the files, but you can see many examples in this discussion and you can equally handle them without tagging. Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 18:37, 31 මාර්තු 2020 (යූටීසී)[reply]
One major issue I faced was deciding whether a file is a copyvio. Is "Files with no machine-readable license" enough?--Lee (talk) 18:46, 31 මාර්තු 2020 (යූටීසී)[reply]
I usually use images.google.com to search for the particular image and look if it appears somewhere else as well. If so, it should have an OTRS confirmation on file. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 13:10, 1 අප්‍රේල් 2020 (යූටීසී)[reply]
That's the same thing I used to do sometime back. But that is very time consuming and not practical for me. But if someone can do that and tag it for deletion with proper information, then it is a totally different story. --Lee (talk) 15:35, 1 අප්‍රේල් 2020 (යූටීසී)[reply]
I found this file tagged for deletion for copyright violation. However I couldn't find any obvious indication on the file that it is so. I asked the person regarding the tagging but no reply there. So far our normal practice has been to delete copyright violations after pointing out the proof. This is one good example why I oppose people who are not involved in our project exercising their admin rights here. --Lee (talk) 17:35, 18 අප්‍රේල් 2020 (යූටීසී)[reply]
That is a professionally-taken photo with no listed source or author, no proof it is under that license, and in the event that ChanakaW (the uploader) is the person who took that photo, then they have very probably been engaging in paid editing. The onus of proof for a license is on the uploader; we assume all things are copyrighted until proof is presented to the contrary. This is why c:COM:OTRS‘s permissions queues exist. Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP)

This is to invite you to join the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) campaign to help improve Wikipedia articles with photos and win prizes. The campaign starts today 1st July 2020 and closes 31st August 2020.

The campaign primarily aims at using images from Wikimedia Commons on Wikipedia articles that are lacking images. Participants will choose among Wikipedia pages without photo images, then add a suitable file from among the many thousands of photos in the Wikimedia Commons, especially those uploaded from thematic contests (Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc.) over the years.

Please visit the campaign page to learn more about the WPWP Campaign.

With kind regards,

Thank you,

Feedback on movement names

සංස්කරණය

Hello. Apologies if you are not reading this message in your native language. Please help translate to your language if necessary. Thank you!

There are a lot of conversations happening about the future of our movement names. We hope that you are part of these discussions and that your community is represented.

Since 16 June, the Foundation Brand Team has been running a survey in 7 languages about 3 naming options. There are also community members sharing concerns about renaming in a Community Open Letter.

Our goal in this call for feedback is to hear from across the community, so we encourage you to participate in the survey, the open letter, or both. The survey will go through 7 July in all timezones. Input from the survey and discussions will be analyzed and published on Meta-Wiki.

Thanks for thinking about the future of the movement, --The Brand Project team, 19:42, 2 ජූලි 2020 (යූටීසී)

Note: The survey is conducted via a third-party service, which may subject it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and data-handling, see the survey privacy statement.
