Troubleshooting Twinkle installation

There are a number of reasons Twinkle installation may fail completely:

• You must be registered, and your account must be autoconfirmed (it must be at least four days old and have at least ten edits), to use Twinkle.
• You must use a supported web browser. Twinkle does not work with Microsoft Internet Explorer.
• If you are using older versions of Opera, Safari, or Firefox, try enabling the JavaScript Standard Library gadget under your preferences → Gadgets → Library and compatibility gadgets.
• If you are using the Modern skin, you need to enable the Monobook compatibility gadget for this skin. This is configured under your preferences → Gadgets → Library and compatibility gadgets.
• After installation, you must clear your browser cache. Instructions on how to do this can be found at Wikipedia:Bypass your cache.
• In case of manual installation, Twinkle must be installed in your skin's .js file (not .css).
• If you have switched skins and are not using the Gadget version of Twinkle, make sure that your current skin's script file is actually importing Twinkle.

If you have tried all of the above suggestions and you still cannot use Twinkle, or if you notice other problems, check the discussion page and, if needed, post the issue there. If you do, please include the following information:

1. What is the behavior you're seeing.
2. What is the behavior you're expecting to see.
3. How can the incorrect behavior be reproduced. Describe exactly what you're doing.
4. Confirm that you have tried bypassing your browser cache.
5. Make note of your browser, browser version, operating system, and operating system version.
6. Append relevant javascript errors your browser logged. To do that, open your javascript console or error console, and copy the relevant error messages. Where you find your javascript console depends on your browser:
   • Firefox: Menu → Tools → Error console.
   • Opera: Menu → Page → Developer Tools → Error Console.
   • Chrome: Page menu → Developer → JavaScript Console (Ctrl+Shift+J).
   • Safari: Page menu → Develop → Show Error Console (Ctrl+Alt+C or Shift+Command+J). You might have to enable it first in Preferences → Advanced.

CSD

Speedy deletion dialog

CSD stands for Criteria for Speedy Deletion. If you believe an article meets a criterion for criteria for speedy deletion, click on the tab, and select the appropriate reason. Note that you will be presented with a different list if the article is in the Image namespace. Twinkle will add the appropriate notice on the article's page, and in most cases, will automatically put a notice on the talk page of the editor who created the article.

RPP

Protection request dialog

Request for Page Protection

Sends a request for protection to the page of the same name. Used for heavily vandalized articles or for articles that are current and likely will have traffic due to a real-life occurrence.

PROD

Proposed deletion dialog

Proposed Deletion - On the article page, leaves a template for proposing an article for deletion, and automatically notifies the article's creator. Also use this page for "sticky prod" (BLP prod).

XfD

Anything for Deletion - Use this tab to nominate a page for deletion in one of the following categories, if it may not meet requirements for inclusion on Wikipedia, but does not meet speedy deletion requirements. This will automatically tag the article, create an entry, add the entry to the log, and notify the article creator of the nomination. :

AfD

Articles for Deletion - only if the article is more controversial than a proposed deletion. Redirects belong in RfD.

TfD

Templates for Deletion - all templates except stub templates.

FfD/PUI

Files for deletion/Possibly unfree images - Images and other media files.

CfD

Categories for Discussion - Choose the type of action requested:

• Deletion
• Merge
• Renaming
• Convert into article

MfD

Miscellany for deletion - User pages, portals, WikiProjects, and other pages outside of the mainspace.

RfD

Redirects for discussion - Redirects in all namespaces.

SfD

Stub types for deletion - Stub sorting templates and categories.

Unlink

This option unlinks backlinks. Backlinks are links from other pages to a given page. Unlinking them delinks the terms linking to that given page. This is often necessary after speedy deletion to prevent a page on a non-notable, vandalism, or other problematic topic from being recreated. It prevents a bunch of redlinks from showing up all over the place when you delete an article. Depending on the article being deleted, you may or may not want to unlink backlinks.

Tag

Friendly's tag functionality.

The tag tab will tag the article with the template(s) of your choice.

All templates that are checked will be added to the article in their proper respective locations. Templates that support it will automatically be added with the date parameter populated to the current month and year. If the "Group into {{Multiple issues}} if possible" checkbox is ticked, Friendly will group supported templates into an {{Multiple issues}} template, if there are four or more. All other selected templates are then added to the article normally. If there are three or fewer selected templates that are supported by the {{Multiple issues}} template, the setting is ignored, and all templates are added to the article normally.

Three templates in the list, {{globalize}}, {{notability}}, and {{current}}, allow you to select from a list of subcategories of the respective templates. The standard template is the default, and selecting a subcategory is not required, but it does place a more specific version of the template on the article. If a {{globalize}} subcategory is selected and templates are being grouped into {{Multiple issues}}, the subcategory is ignored as {{Multiple issues}} only supports the standard {{globalize}} template. The {{notability}} subcategories are ignored in the same way when grouping.

If the redirect URL parameter is set to "no" and there is no rcid URL parameter, the tag tab will assume that you are viewing a redirect page. Instead of presenting you with a normal set of article tags, the tab will present you with a set of redirect categorization tags, from Category:Redirect templates.

ARV

ARV stands for Advanced Reporting and Vetting. This functions similarly to the warn tab. When on any user namespace page, or on Special:Contributions/USER, click this button to report them to administrators for several possible infractions:

• Vandalism - Reports the user to Administrator intervention against vandalism; use this when the user has vandalized after a final warning has been issued. If you have just reverted the user's vandalism and the user talk page has opened, the fields about the vandalized article (title, revision IDs) should be automatically filled in. Check the appropriate boxes that apply to the user.
  • Vandalism after final warning given - should be checked for most reports
  • Vandalism after recent release of block
  • Evidently vandalism-only account - for username accounts only, with no constructive edits
  • Account is evidently a spambot or a compromised account
  • Account is a promotion only account
• Username - Reports the user to Usernames for administrator attention. Check the policies at Wikipedia:Username policy to ensure that one of the 4 general reasons applies before ticking off the subexamples.
• Sockpuppet - Use this to report that a case of suspected sockpuppetry, including the suspected puppeteer and relevant evidence. It will create a new page at Sockpuppet investigations.

On user talk pages, there are several additional tabs:

Warning dialog

On user talk pages, the warn tab allows you to leave one of a variety of warning messages on a user's talk page. To use, first click the warn tab. A window will appear with the following options:

• Two drop-down menus with the warning level and warning type (see list of warnings)
• The article name to reference for the warning (this is often automatically populated if you are warning on a user talk page that was opened as the result of a Twinkle rollback)
• Any additional comments that you wish to be included in the warning message.

Clicking Submit will post the chosen warning to the user's talk page and then refresh the page in your browser.

"tb" Tab

The tb tab will allow you to easily leave {{talkback}} templates on other users' talk pages. It supports all of the talkback template's options that you would have available as if you were leaving the template by hand.

"wel" Tab

Friendly's welcome functionality.

The wel tab will welcome the user with selected template.

If an article is specified in the input field, and the template supports an article link, Friendly will automatically link the template to the article you specified. All templates that support this are marked with an asterisk ("*"). In the case of normal welcome templates, the article would be one that the user contributed positively to. In the case of problem user welcome templates, the article would be one that the user vandalized or did not contribute positively to. This input field is automatically populated if the vanarticle URL parameter is found, which is populated by Twinkle after doing a rollback.

Friendly is capable of supporting a custom list of templates that displays below the standard set of Welcome templates. If you have installed Friendly, you can add a list of templates that you would like to be added to the Welcome dialogue by properly defining the customWelcomeList parameter in Friendly's configuration. Any templates added to this list, when selected, will simply be placed on the user's talk page with no heading, no arguments, and will be followed by your signature.

"shared ip" Tab

Friendly's shared IP functionality.

The shared ip tab will tag the IP as a shared IP address.

Most of the Shared IP templates require that the name of the organization that owns or operates the IP address be input. If one of these templates is selected, Friendly will require that you fill in the "Organization name" input field, which does support wikitext.

A welcome link will also appear next to a user in a diff view if the user's talk page is empty. This allows you to quickly welcome the user with the template specified in the quickWelcomeTemplate parameter (by default) or easily open the user's talk page with Friendly's welcome dialogue already visible (if the quickWelcomeMode parameter is set to semiauto). This feature is available when viewing any diff across all namespaces.

Additional functions

friendlyclock

The friendlyclock feature inserts an updating UTC clock in the top right-hand corner of the screen so that the UTC time is always visible and handy. This feature also allows the ability to easily purge the current page by simply clicking on the clock. If you have other scripts or gadgets installed that add a UTC clock to the screen, you may want to disable them, or disable this feature of Friendly. The feature can be entirely disabled by setting the enableClock configuration parameter to false.

This feature is not available if you have Friendly installed as a gadget.

friendlytabs

The friendlytabs feature can be used to shorten all of the common, long tab names that Wikipedia uses. For example, "edit this page" is changed to "edit" and "discussion" to "talk", by default. This gives Friendly users more room for a variety of extra function tabs by shortening the amount of space that common tabs take up. This feature can be configured or disabled; see the configuration section for details.

For admins, the default action for csd is to delete the page. One option offered turns it into the other behaviour - to tag the page for deletion. If Orphan backlinks is checked, all backlinks to this page or image instances of the particular image are removed.

This module allows one to delete several images found on a page, or in a category, and unlink them from pages. As this module is fully automatic, it's important to take great care to know what it will do. It might not be the best solution in some circumstances. You should be quite careful with this script, as it has the potential to cause massive damage if used improperly.

To configure Twinkle, copy the text below and paste it in your skin script file. It does not matter if you put the config before or after the includes or have Twinkle installed as a gadget. Each line contains a specific setting which is described below. You can remove any settings that you do not want to change from the default, but do not remove the first line. When changing settings, make sure not to remove the semicolon from the end of each line.

deliWatch...

Controls the watchlist setting of the respective pages that are touched during "di" image taggings. The actual configuration keys are deliWatchPage for the page that is being marked for deletion, deliWatchUsages for the content pages that receive notice of the tag, and deliWatchUser for the user page of the original page creator where a notification may be placed.
Possible values of all these keys are "yes" to always watch the respective page, "no" to not watch (or unwatch!) the page, or "default" to keep MediaWiki's suggested watchlist setting (depends on the pages current watchlist status and your Wikipedia preferences).

xfdWatch...

Controls the watchlist setting of the respective pages that are touched during XfD nominations. The actual configuration keys are xfdWatchDiscussion for the XfD discussion page, xfdWatchList for the list page if the XfD type has lists of transcluded discussion pages, xfdWatchPage for the page that is being marked for XfD, xfdWatchUsages for the content pages that receive notice of the discussion (currently only relevant with images), and xfdWatchUser for the user page of the original page creator where a notification may be placed.
Possible values of all these keys are "yes" to always watch the respective page, "no" to not watch (or unwatch!) the page, or "default" to keep MediaWiki's suggested watchlist setting (depends on the pages current watchlist status and your Wikipedia preferences).

clockStyle

Defines whether a static or dynamic clock should be displayed. The dynamic clock will update the time continuously, while the static clock will always display the time that you loaded the page. Valid parameter values are dynamic and static.

Argument is a String, default to dynamic.

enableClock

Defines whether Friendly's clock should be shown.

Argument is a boolean, default to true.

groupByDefault

Defines if the checkbox for template grouping should be checked by default.

It is recommended that you not change this option.

Argument is a boolean, default to true.

idsToRename

Defines the document ids for the tabs that Friendly's tab feature should rename. It is an array of hashes, with each hash containing an id that must be a string and a name that must be a string. If a matching id is found on the page you are currently browsing, Friendly changes the link name to what is defined in the name. If renaming the article tab (id: 'ca-nstab-main') you can also specify a boolean parameter called mainPageOnly in the hash. If set to true, the particular name for the id in this hash will only be used on Wikipedia's main page.

Defines whether a heading is added to a welcome template that does not already contain one.

Defines whether a signature (~~~~) is added after the welcome template if the template has no signature.

It is recommended that you not change this option.

insertTalkbackSignature

Defines whether a signature (~~~~) is added after all talkback notices, even if you enter no personalized message.

Argument is a boolean, default to false.

insertUsername

Defines if your username should be added to the template, if the template supports it. Example: {{welcome|Ioeth}}.

Argument is a boolean, default to true.

markSharedIPAsMinor

Defines if adding a shared IP template should be marked as a minor edit.

Argument is a boolean, default to true.

markTaggedPagesAsMinor

Defines if adding a tag should be marked as a minor edit.

Argument is a boolean, default to true.

markTaggedPagesAsPatrolled

Defines if tagging should automatically mark the page as patrolled.

maskTemplateInSummary

Defines whether Friendly will reference the specific template you used in the edit summary. This is useful if you do not want welcomed users to see that you welcomed them with {{welcomevandal}}, for instance.

quickWelcomeMode

Defines which quick welcome mode Friendly will operate in when welcoming a new user directly from a historical diff page. Automatic mode will add the template defined in the quickWelcomeTemplate variable to the user's talk page with no user intervention. Semi-automatic mode will load the user's talk page and then prompt you with the welcome template list as if you clicked the "welcome" tab.

The value of this argument must either be auto or semiauto.

Argument is a string, default to semiauto.

quickWelcomeTemplate

Defines which welcome template Friendly will use when welcoming a new user directly from a historical diff page.

The value of this argument must exactly match one of the templates available from the "welcome" tab on a user talk page. Do not include the curly braces, only the template name, and make sure the capitalization matches.

Argument is a string, default to Welcome.

talkbackHeading

Defines what heading is to be added above talkback templates if insertHeadings is true.

Argument is a string, default to == Talkback ==.

topWelcomes

Defines if the welcome should be added to the top or bottom of the user's talk page.

Argument is a boolean, default to false.

watchTaggedPages

Defines if adding a tag should add a page to watchlist.

Argument is a boolean, default to true.

watchWelcomes

Defines if adding a welcome should add page to watchlist.

Argument is a boolean, default to true.

welcomeHeading

Custom Parameters

Friendly's tag and welcome functionality supports custom maintenance and welcome templates which are provided to the script by adding the customTagList and customWelcomeList parameters to FriendlyConfig. This functionality is somewhat complex to set up, so it is not recommended for users that are inexperienced with JavaScript. If you require assistance, please post a message on the talk page and someone will most likely come along to help you out.

To add custom template functionality to your Friendly tag screen, insert the following code below your other Friendly configuration:

Location of Twinkle menu items

The default location of the Twinkle menu items in Vector is in a drop-down menu; in all other skins they are displayed on the top menu bar. If you like, you can change the location and layout of those items on your page by altering the following parameters:

Alternatively, you can create a new menu just for the Twinkle items. In that case, add

The portletId parameter now refers to the specific Twinkle tool set, 'p-twinkle'. portletArea indicates where the menu should appear (the value 'column-one' is the sidebar for Monobook; for Vector it is 'panel' and for Modern it is 'mw_portlets'; Other options include 'left-navigation' and 'right-navigation' in Vector and 'mw_contentwrapper' in Modern, which will appear on a new level above the other tabs). Change portletNext to dictate which ID the new Twinkle menu should precede; in this case 'p-search' means it will come before the search box. Change the portletName parameter to change the name displayed named along with the new menu, if applicable - in this case, "Twinkle".
