The school was started in 1976 as a primary school. Muthubanda. The school recognizes the service rendered by former Principal Premasiri Ekanayake and many dedicated teachers. In 1996, the school was converted into a secondary school, which belonged to category 1C and was upgraded to a college.

It currently provides approximately 1700 students in primary and secondary education with about 100 academic staff. Around 400 students from the Haputale electorate conduct classes annually. This shows the success and reputation of the school. The current principal, Tilakaratne (SLPS 2I), is a major force in the administration, keeping teachers and students under constant supervision.
The school has a number of facilities such as an IT unit, a laboratory and an aesthetic unit. As a result they have achieved many achievements in the academic as well as external field.
DMV Maintains an excellent record in both academic and non-academic fields. Grade 5 Scholarships are located above the Haputale Electorate. The highest number of schools out of this school can take the exam by donating a spark to the school per year. This time 24 students sat for the examination and 4 of them obtained more than 175 marks.
Every year D.M.V. Scholars have described the excellent G.C.E. (O / L) Result of Haputale Electorate. In 2010, three students of this school received 8A and 1B and 15 students received their GCE. (Ordinary Level) Examination.
The new A / L classes started in 2008 only from the Commerce and Arts streams and were the first group to sit for the exam last year. One student from that group entered the university. Although the A / L class was started in 2008, it has produced some great people. Dr. Anuruddha Foundation President of the Sri Lanka Medical Association is the best among them. D.M.V. High-ranking military officers, high-ranking officers, scientists and government officials showed great talent all over the world.
Diyatalawa Mahaweli H. Students shine. They are the best of the best road and field events. Brian Dananji Augustine, Udayalankara and Aravinda Dissanayake are some of their famous players. D.V. Uva Province has the highest number of boys scouts (in Uva Province) at 123 and they are a good example for the school.
D.M.V. The students performed well in language, dance, art and music competitions and brought provincial and national level medals to the school. Diyatalawa Maha Vidyalaya hosted a weekly Green Festival on 6th December 2011 to mark the 35th anniversary of GCE. (Ordinary Level) Exam this year.
