A Horcrux is a dark magical object in the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling, which is created by splitting one's soul in the course of committing a murder, and embedding that fragment of soul in another object or creature. Creating a Horcrux confers immortality as long as the Horcrux remains intact. The concept is introduced by Horace Slughorn in the sixth book in the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, though Horcruxes are present in earlier books without being identified as such. The retrieval and destruction of Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes forms the main focus of the final two books in the set, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
