The events surrounding Mahinda's arrival and meeting with the king form one of the most important legends of Sri Lankan history.

According to the Mahavamsa king Devanampiyatissa was out enjoying a hunt with some 40,000 of his soldiers near a mountain called [[Mihintale|Missaka]]. The date for this is traditionally associated with the full moon day of the month of Poson.
 
මහා වංශයට අනුව 40000 ක් වූ සෙබල මුලක් සමග දේවානම්පියතිස්ස රජු මිස්සක නම් පර්වතය අසබඩ දඩ කෙළියෙහි යෙදුනේය. පාරම්පරිකව පැවතෙන තොරතුරු අනුව මෙම දිනය පොසොන් පුර පසළොස්වක දිනයකි.
Having come to the foot of Missaka, Devanampiyatissa chased a stag into the thicket, and came across Mahinda (referred to with the honorific title Thera); amusingly the Mahavamsa has the great king 'terrified' and convinced that the Thera was in fact a 'yakka', or demon. However, Thera Mahinda declared that 'Recluses we are, O great King, disciples of the King of Dhamma (Buddha) Out of compassion for you alone have we come here from [[Jambudvipa|Jambudipa]]'. Devanampiyatissa recalled the news from his friend Ashoka and realised that these are missionaries sent from India. Thera Mahinda went on to preach to the king's company and preside over the king's conversion to Buddhism.
 
මිස්සක පව්ව පා මුලට පැමිණි දේවානම් පියතිස්ස මුවෙකු දැක ඌ ලුහු බඳිමින් වන රොද තුළට වැදුනේය. මෙහිදී ඔහුට මිහිඳු හිමි මුණ ගැසුනේය. මහා වංශය මෙම සිද්ධියට හාස්‍යය මුසු කරමින් විස්තර කර ඇත්තේ රජුට යක්ෂයෙකු හමු වූ බවත් ඔහු ඉන් බියට පත් වූ බවත් සඳහන් කරමිනි. මිහිඳු හිමි රජු අමතා "මහ රජ අපි ශ්‍රමණ භවත් ගෞතමයන්ගේ ශ්‍රාවකයන් වෙමු. ඔබ කෙරේ උපන් අනුකම්පාවෙන් දඹදිව සිට පැමිණියෙමු" යයි පවසා සිටියහ. දේවානම් පියතිස්ස රජුට තම මිතුරු අශෝක පිළිබඳ තොරතුරු සිහියට නැගුණි. පැමිණි පිරිස ධර්ම ප්‍රචාරක කටයුතු සඳහා ඉන්දියාවේ සිට පැමිණ ඇති බව රජුට අවබෝධ විය. මිහිඳු හිමියන් රජුට ධර්ම දේශනා කළ අතර ඉන් පසු රජතුමා බුදු දහම වැළඳ ගත්තේය.
