Sri Lanka has a [[two-party system]], which means that there are two dominant political parties, with difficulty for anybody to achieve electoral success under the banner of any other party. In the last decades, the [[United National Party]] and the [[Sri Lanka Freedom Party]] have been the largest parties, by far. The general rule, however, has become coalition politics, since neither SLFP nor UNP are able to gather parliamentary majorities. In the [[Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam|LTTE]]-controlled northern areas, the two main parties are non-existent.
