In [[ජර්මානු භාෂාව|ජර්මානු]]-speaking countries, most Eastern European countries, the former [[Sovietසෝවියට් Unionසංගමය]], most parts of [[Africa]], [[ආසියාව]], and many [[Spanish language|Spanish]]-speaking countries the corresponding degree is simply called "doctor" (''Doktor''), and is distinguished by subject area with a [[Latin]] suffix (e.g. "Dr.med." for {{lang|la|doctor medicinæ}}, which is a title like a master, unlike a PhD, "Dr.rer.nat" for {{lang|la|doctor rerum naturalium}} — Doctor of Science, "Dr. phil." for {{lang|la|doctor philosophiæ}}, "Dr. iur." for {{lang|la|doctor iuris}}, which is not equal to a J.D., etc.).
